Things to do in Sydney
Visiting Dee Why Beach is an excellent thing to do in Sydney on a nice day. I really rate it highly.
Dee Why Beach promenade area had a massive landscaped rework a few years ago. The new layout works well with grassy areas for picnics, wooden seats, children’s playground, picnic tables & bbq’s.
Upgrading work to widen the footpaths along this strip is now in the final stages & is nearing completion.
The walk from the surf club out to the ocean rock pool is very enjoyable & ramps are provided for wheel chair accessibility. Also the walk to Long Reef & back is fairly easy (around 1 hour return). If you are still feeling energetic, keep going all the way up to Long Reef headland for a very nice view looking back towards Dee Why.
There is free wi-fi along the beach front supplied by Warringah Council. Just use your laptop or device to search for WIFI@thestrand, open your browser & click the link to allow access.
Behind the surf club next to Dee Why Lagoon (James Meehan Reserve/Dee Why Lagoon Wildlife Refuge) is also nice & a little more protected from the wind if you want an alternative grassy picnic location. The surf club has just finished expansion work & new toilet facilities are now located next to the surf club.
Swimming & body surfing is generally safe depending on conditions. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards from late September until late May.
Surfing conditions are good on the beach usually with a variety of breaks. Dee Why point is very popular & can handle larger swells. Spectators can get a good close view of the action from the ocean rock pool steps.
There is also a huge selection of restaurants & café to choose from along “The Strand Strip” that runs parallel with the beach or you can just get take away fish and chips to take over to the beach & relax.

Car parking is for free on the side streets & usually with no time limit. There is also a large council operated car park behind the surf club. Rates are $5 per hour or $8 for all day during the week & $25 for all day parking over the weekends (unless you have a Warringah Council parking sticker). The Strand offers a few car spaces that have time limits. It gets busy here on public holidays so get going early. Another council car park is located at Dee Why point with easy access to the ocean rock pool.
Where Pacific Parade meets the car park is a small flat grass area with great views looking towards Long Reef. You will see some stairs that start the walking track along the headland edge to North Curl Curl Beach. The walk takes around 30 – 40 minutes one way.
Sydney buses pass by the beach on their way to Manly or Chatswood (136)
